Building Maintenance Technician CSL

Phipps Conservatory is a recognized leader in public gardens worldwide for green buildings and sustainable operations management. Our mission is to inspire and educate visitors with the beauty and importance of plants; to advance sustainability and worldwide biodiversity through action and research; and to celebrate our historic glasshouse. Currently, Phipps is engaged in the final stages of construction of the Center for Sustainable Landscapes, a state-of-the-art building which will exceed LEED Platinum. We are seeking an experienced Building Maintenance Technician as we move into the next level of sustainable building management.

 

Within the context of achieving the highest level of green buildings and operations possible, the essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

·         Maintenance, repair and commissioning of all renewable energy sources including solar panel arrays and wind turbine.

·         Operating, installing and maintaining equipment including boilers, pumps, valves, piping, generators, air conditioning, compressors, fans and related machinery.

·         Installing and maintaining electrical equipment including switches, controls, motors, lighting, wiring, etc.

·         Managing and completing work tickets.

 

A valid Pennsylvania driver’s license is required.  Must be available to work any of three shifts, seven days a week.  Phipps offers a competitive compensation package, strong benefits and unique atmosphere.

Job Title  

Plant Engineer/EHS Specialist

Purpose        

Provide technical support for the safe, cost effective operation and maintenance of the power plant.  Support staff and management to maximize efficiency, plant capacity factor, availability, environmental and safety compliance.

Job Functions

Essential Functions

Ensure the Facility is in compliance in all regulatory areas (ie water, air, waste).  File all required environmental reports and submittals on time.

Take a lead role in the employee safety team and plant safety program including STOP, audits, etc.

Coach and work with the operators in activities including but not limited to root cause analysis, performance monitoring and evaluation, environmental and safety compliance,

Review operational and performance data, evaluate and report findings to Plant Manager.  Prepare and submit daily and monthly reports as required.

To the extent possible and practical, design new systems, or improve the design of existing systems as required to improve system performance so as to maximize Facility availability and power production.

Evaluate plant betterment projects, field change requests and monitor project budgets.

Perform routine and emergency maintenance/repair work as required.      

Overtime may be required as well as shift work when/if necessary.

Monitor and promote employee professional development and training.  Assist in setting employee objectives and employee performance evaluations.

Review Facility operating and maintenance data so as to pinpoint or preclude equipment problems.

Execute the Event Response process ensuring root causes are identified and countermeasures implemented to prevent re-occurrence.

Manage the continual evaluation of all processes to ensure continual improvement and optimization is achieved.

Submit necessary reports and recommendations to Management concerning equipment/Facility status and/or problems.

Monitor the Facility and equipment in a way that will maximize Owner and Company profits and minimize losses.

Responsible for maintaining confidentiality of all information available to the position.

Perform all duties and responsibilities assigned by the immediate supervisor to this position, but not specifically stated in this description.

Manage commercial and engineering records, subcontractors and regulatory documentation in accordance with good engineering practices and state and federal agency requirements.

Assist in the development of the annual business plan.

Assist in the preparation of the annual budget.

Participate in the planning and execution of the plant annual outages.

Ability to supervise subcontractors and governmental inspections as required.

Act as a team member with all GDF Suez employees.

Comply with all GDF Suez policies and procedures.

Other Functions

Carry out other duties as assigned by Plant Manager.

Requirements

 

Education and Experience

Bachelor degree in engineering (ABET accredited) plus five (5) years of power plant related field experience, or greater than ten (10) years of power plant related field experience.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

 


 

Essential Physical Abilities

Must be physically capable of climbing stairs and ladders.

Must be capable of physically demanding work at heights and with adverse conditions during operations and when participating in fire/emergency activities.

Must be physically capable of entering and working in a confined

space.

Must be physically capable of lifting 50 lbs. of weight.

Must have eyesight corrected to 20/40 to accurately read and interpret instruments and gauges.

Must be physically capable to pass a respirator physical and respirator fit test.

Must be physically capable to work a rotating shift schedule.

Must be physically capable to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment, and portable radio communication.

Working Environment

Indoors – 70%

Outdoors – 30%
